Frequently Asked Questions

You Asked, We Answered

For Instructors

  • How do I login to Canvas?
Canvas accepts the same username and password as your iSpartan (UNCG Gmail) account. You can login to your Canvas account at canvas.uncg.edu.
  • How do I reset my Canvas password?
Canvas accepts the same username and password as your iSpartan (UNCG Gmail) account. If you do not know your password, you may reset it on the UNCG Self-Service Password Reset form.
  • Are organizations available in Canvas?

Yes, the LMS team is currently creating organizations in Canvas. However, depending on the requirements of your organization, we are recommending other tools that might work better for you than Canvas.

If your organization is mainly used as an email distribution list, we recommend that you use Google Groups for your organization. Google Groups is functionally a moderated email list. You can have a group created and then you can manage the list, either subscribing members or allowing subscriptions, allowing one way or two way discussion/posting, etc. Learn more about Google Groups at: http://its.uncg.edu/iSpartan/Groups/.

If your organization is mainly used for sharing documents, Google Drive or Box might be better alternatives. For more information, see: http://its.uncg.edu/ispartan/Drive/ and http://its.uncg.edu/box/.

If you use your organization as a website, Google Sites allow you to create a custom website which can be used to post material, including announcements. Individuals can subscribe to the site, and thus receive notifications when the site has been updated. Learn more at: http://its.uncg.edu/iSpartan/Sites/.

If you do wish to have an organization in Canvas, visit this request form: http://its.uncg.edu/Canvas/Organization_Request.

  • What Apps/LTI Integrations are available in Canvas?

Apps are an easy way to add new features to Canvas. To see what apps we currently have installed, select “Settings” from your course menu and then the “Apps” tab. Some apps have automatically been installed in all courses (iClicker) and appear by default in your course menu. (If there is an app that you won’t be using, you can select the “Navigation” tab in “Settings” and drag those menu items to the bottom of the screen to hide them from students.)

To add additional apps to your menu, simply click the app in the list of “all” or “not installed” apps and select “Add Tool”.

If you are interested in installing other apps that have not been turned on for UNCG, please contact 6-TECH at 256-8324 or 6-tech@uncg.edu.

  • Does Canvas have a way to check for plagiarism?
Canvas uses Turnitin for plagiarism detection. In order to use Turnitin, instructors need to create an assignment with submission type of “External Tool” and choose Turnitin from the list of external tools. Advanced Turnitin settings allow instructors to choose whether and when students can see originality reports, what to compare the assignment against, and whether to include it in the Turnitin repository (not including it in the repository will allow students to submit draft versions of the assignment).
  • A student says they’re enrolled in my course but I don’t see them on my roster. What should I do?
The student can check UNCGenie to see if they are registered for your course. If they are listed in Genie but not in Canvas, they can contact 6-TECH at 256-8324 or 6-tech@uncg.edu. If they are NOT listed in Genie, the student should contact the Registrar’s office (http://reg.uncg.edu or 336-334-5946) for assistance.
  • How do I combine courses?
Canvas refers to combining courses as cross-listing. Make sure that you are the instructor in all the courses you want to combine. Decide which course will be the main (parent) course, then login to the course that is the child course and follow these instructions. You must do this for each course that will be combined into the parent.
  • Can I use eReserves with Canvas?
Yes, the library will create a shared folder in Box for your eReserves and send instructions on how to access them from Canvas.
  • Does Starfish work with Canvas?
University Faculty, Students, and Staff are able to access Starfish from within Canvas by selecting Account, then Profile. Starfish is a menu item on the profile.
  • How do I make my course unavailable after the semester is over?
When the semester is over, courses are automatically set to a “Concluded” state. In this state, students who took the course can still access it in a “read-only” fashion. Quizzes and tests are NOT accessible once the course is concluded. You can select to “unpublish” specific content if you would like to hide it after the semester ends.
  • How do I copy my course from the development shell to the new semester? Or from semester to semester?
In the new course, select “Settings” from the Navigation menu. Select “Import Content into this Course”. In “Course Type”, choose “Copy a Canvas Course”. Search for the name of the development course or the course from a previous semester (make sure you check “Include completed courses” if you are copying from a previous semester).
Select “All Content” and click “Import”. You will receive an email when the course import is completed.
  • I’m ready to begin course development for next semester; when will those courses be available to me?
The LMS team attempts to make courses available to instructors as quickly as possible. Since courses are relatively static after registration has ended, courses for the next semester will become available in Canvas at the end of the registration period. Please check the following schedule to see when future semesters’ courses will be created in Canvas:

    Term Date available in Canvas
    Fall 2016 April 27, 2016 (Reading Day)

    Fall 2017 May 3, 2017 (Reading Day)
  • Does Canvas have a mobile app?

Canvas Mobile works on iOS and Android devices and allows you to access Canvas on the go. Not all features are available for all devices. Canvas also has the SpeedGrader app (iPad and Android 4.0.3 or later only) which allows you to grade student submissions from your mobile device and sync with SpeedGrader and the Gradebook in Canvas.
